Tottori Sand Dunes [鳥取砂丘]
The largest and most remote sand dune field in all of Japan. A favorite locale for amateur entomologists due the presence of rare and largely endemic creatures, including the Tottori Sand Dune Ant, Scopula Moth, and rare species of Darkling beetles. The Tottori Sand Dunes entered international public consciousness as the setting for Kōbō Abe's dystopian romance novel The Woman of the Dunes - an awareness later bolstered by the novel's Cannes-winning film adaptation. The dunes subsequently were featured as the setting for various Japanese apocalyptic film and tv projects - later even functioning as a runway of sorts for the infamous PARCO Collexion IV fashion line.
