Combahee River
[related: Combahee River Collective, Harriet Tubman]
A river in South Carolina that holds major historical and political significance in African American and feminist histories. In 1863, Harriet Tubman led a Union raid along the river, freeing over 700 enslaved people—the only known U.S. military operation led by a Black woman. The name was later adopted by the Combahee River Collective, a Black feminist group active in the 1970s, whose foundational 1977 statement emphasized the interlocking nature of racial, gender, sexual, and class oppression, asserting that the liberation of Black women necessitates the end of all forms of domination. Despite the group's intellectual grounding and nonviolent ethos, its members were heavily surveilled by the FBI as an extension of the then "dormant" COINTELPRO initiative. The river has since become a symbol of liberation, self-determination, and collective action led by Black women.
