Suppressed elements of the psyche that emerge during schizophrenic episodes, relating to bicameralism. In Freudian psychology, alters are depicted as core psycho-spiritual elements that are unsuccessfully either 1) shed or 2) synthesized in imago. Confused often enough with the term "altar" [precise locus point for religious or spiritual ritual] as to have taken on conjoined meaning.
