Spectral Peaks
The earliest extant hypertext codex attributed to the digital recluse mailer_daemon. Spectral Peaks was originally accessible on MindVox's Code-X Digital platform via a UseNet BBS cryptographical link. Unlike m_d's later work, Spectral Peaks contains no imagery and is limited to text, ASCII, and extremely rudimentary coding. The work is characterized by a dreamlike, stream-of-consciousness approach, seamlessly weaving together references to Greek Mythology, various semi-obscure films and filmmakers (Tarkovsky, Chris Marker, et al), hair metal, and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Although the exact date of composition remains unknown, available technology and multiple apparent references to the first gulf war appear to date the work in the 1991-92 range.
