From its nascent beginnings, the mid '90's hacker rap collective Konami Dream eschewed traditional commercial releases, beginning with their first single - a slurred, 8-minute ambient/experimental track featuring pitch-down vocals, modular synthesizers, and moog bass. Named after the semi-sentient AI entity from Stanley Kubrick's 2001, HAL was illegally mp3-encoded using pirated Blade Encoder (or BladeEnc) software, enhancing the track's garbled and warped sound. The group then hacked into IBM's corporate website, secretly embedding the track on the company's Deep Blue webpage, a process that came to be known as phreaqueleaking.
