ARPANET AKA Advanced Research Projects Agency Network
The first computer network of distributed control - a system that laid the groundwork for what would eventually become UseNet and, more widely, the Internet. Though ARPANET was developed and funded by the United States Department of Defense[1] specifically for the cataloguing and sharing of research, its emergent and foundational technologies were fluidly shared (and monetized) by the techno-communication behemoths Ma Bell and IBM.
