~~The eternal-september wiki is hosted on a Google Cloud Service (GCS) Compute Engine instance. You need to have a GCS account and be a member of the "eternal-september" project.~~

"viewtron" is the name of the instance running the wiki. It's the equivalent of an Intel Xeon CPU running at 2.20GHz, with 4GB of RAM and a single 50 GB boot/data disk. It's running Debian 11 (bullseye).

~~==== Creating a user ====~~

To create a new user account on the instance, do the following. (If you're used to administrating a linux machine the traditional way, please do it this way for interactive accounts with a home dir and login access.) You have to edit the instance then add a new ssh key by clicking "ADD ITEM" at the end of the "SSH Keys" list. The name at the end of the new key will be the name of the new account. GCS will create the new user account when the changes are saved.

~~If you're replacing a user's ssh key, just paste the new key over the old and save changes. Make sure the same user name is at the end of the key.~~

~~=== Wiki info ===~~

This wiki began as a generic install of mediawiki. As such, most of the admin processes are identical to what's already explained in mediawiki's official documentation. For example, to create a new user see the docs here. You can use the search box to find other operations.

~~Only the differences will be documented here.~~

~~The mediawiki version and configuration info can be found on the "Version" special page.~~

~~==== Wiki email ====~~

~~There is no outgoing email service on this wiki. Any features that depend on it must be avoided. In particular, account creation flows that send an invite email won't work.~~

~~=== DNS info ===~~

~~DNS is handled by Pair Domains. Log in with lieravoidwell.~~

Pair Domains is a fairly typical domain registrar service, with a leaning toward more technical users. The main dashboard shows a list of registered domains and their expiration dates. Clicking on a domain name takes you to that domain's registration details. The only interesting thing here is the link to "Domain Address Settings".

~~~~
~~~~

~~Records can be added, removed, etc. here.~~

~~To register a new domain name, enter the domain name at the top of the page and hit Go.~~

~~~~
Available domains are listed, prices, etc. Add them to the cart and check out. The domain will appear in the list of domains, and the first thing to do is enable "Domain Address Settings". Now you can add A records, etc.
