mailer_daemon: Millennium Rift
SIDE A
1. Doldrums
In the halcyon days of the early internet, electronic bulletin board systems provided a forum for the posting of all manner of digital content. UseNet in particular became a haven for hackers, cyber artists, and tech-literate outcasts to congregate. From this strange social amalgam emerged mailer_daemon, an anonymous digital recluse of the highest order. Based on his Usenet history, mailer_daemon spent the 1980's as an under-recognized composer and poet in New York City. After a series of creative and personal disappointments, mailer_daemon uploaded Spectral Peaks, a dense, cryptic collection of hypertext containing a manic swirl of references including hair metal, Christian apocrypha, Nintendo games and quantum theory - all through a lens of surrealistic boredom.
In the dark before dawn
I sing my nightingale song
as I search for your touch
and in the amethyst wind
I feel it starting again
like a hunger inside
Floating on a pink cloud
like a tv on with no sound
channel fuzz surrounding us
the windows fill with blue light
we slip into an endless night
and tumble into paradise
and no one would believe it
we're in another world right now
they'll say that we're deceivers
we're lost in a dream right now
Beneath vermillion skies
I see that look in your eyes
an ocean of desire
and as the tide rolls in
we find our island of sin
in the cerulean fog
we can make it last forever
in the cerulean fog
making love forever
in the cerulean fog
SIDE B
2. Heaven (or Something Like It)
Never gonna let them come between us
never running like the rest
never gonna let this neon town beat us down
Heaven is a place I go
when I'm with you baby
each morning is a maudlin show
when I'm on my own
heaven is a place I know
Never gonna let them tell us different
cause we're the Generation X
never gonna waste our time belonging
ennui is the enemy of sex
Who knows if we're coming or going
trapped inside this garden of stone
who knows if we're living or dying, but
Heaven is a place
Heaven is a place I go
when I'm with you baby
each morning is a maudlin show
when I'm on my own
heaven is a place I know
Magnum opus of the digital recluse mailer_daemon.
