Konami Dream
[related: Luk Thung, Phreaque Leak, BARCODE, Aeon Flux (rapper), LKA Hades, Kevin Venom, S.O.T.A]
----
Underground hacker/rap collective of shrouded membership and controversial tactics active throughout the mid- to late-1990's. Associated individuals include the rappers Aeon Flux, Kevin Venom, and LKA Hades AKA Hades of the Underworld, the producers Kevorkian and IllI|IllIl||lI AKA BARCODE, and the hackers fantom_limb AKA S.O.T.A (State of the Art) and The Mechanic. The group was inspired partially by the work of Hideo Kojima, specifically the Metal Gear Solid series produced for the NES platform by the Konami Corp. Konami Dream is considered to be a pioneer of hacker rap, a movement merging computer/phone hacking (or phreaking) with sample-based hip-hop music. The group first became known for "phreaque leaking", a process in which illegally BladeEnc'd .mp3's were secretly embedded on various hacked websites. The group's most prominent phreaque leaks include:
* The 6-minute 2001-inspired ambient rap track HAL, was embedded on the Deep Blue page of IBM's corporate website.

* Matrix Racer, a NESticle-fueled ROMhack mutation of the NES's flagship racing platform, Rad Racer, which was covertly released piecemeal on various BBS posting boards by resident hacker fantom_limb (later known as S.O.T.A.)

* Solitaire, an ambient rap track paired with the lifting, modifying, and redistributing of Microsoft Windows' proprietary "Solitaire" or SOL.EXE software.

Though not technically a phreaque leak, Konami followed "Solitaire" with Judgement Day, a three part audiovisual diatribe against various capitalistic power structures pirated atop a rerun of a late night NY1 broadcast.. Following the untimely departures of S.O.T.A. and BARCODE , the group pivoted to self-released mixtapes, beginning with 1997's anime-inspired Berserk!, a 20-minute hype-laden romp produced by new producer, Kevorkian. Berserk!s released generated commercial interest in the group, leading to conflict and, eventually, internal fracture, with Kevorkian and rapper LKA Hades departing to pursue the ambitious though ill-fated LP Hellraiser, an album containing an estimated $500k worth of uncleared samples.

Artistically, Konami Dream's early sound leaned heavily on producer IllI|IllIl||lI AKA BARCODE's modular synth-heavy production. The group later shifted towards sampled elements - first from anime soundtracks, including Susumu Hirasawa's Berserk, and later to electronic luk thung, or Thai country music, intermingling manipulated found sounds with newly produced synthesizer and drum machine parts. Lyrically, the group focused on issues of technology, heroism, anti-capitalism, and blackness in America. Though later shifting its focus almost exclusively to music production, Konami Dream remains associated with the extended mid-1990's hacking groups Legion of Doom, Masters of Deception, and Cult of the Dead Cow, the latter of which also produced and released original music. Konami Dream's music was originally disseminated via UseNet posting boards, and, later, via Hotline Connect. The group displayed a notable obsession with the ill-fated NeXT BlackBox3 gaming system, reportedly once performing enmeshed in a three screen projection mirroring the console's three-television display gimmick.
[Atari, 1985] [related: Death]
----
Pioneering hack-and-slash arcade video game released by Atari in 1985. Gauntlet was a fixture in 1980's Mall Culture and is widely recognized for revolutionizing the monetization of arcade platforms and shattering previous metrics for per-hour income. Gauntlet showcased the simultaneous gameplay of four characters - the warrior Thor, the wizard Merlin, the valkyrie Thyra, and the much maligned elf Questor - in a "bullet hell" atmosphere of cascading attacks and countless enemies. Notorious for being the first commercially released "quarter muncher," the game's mechanics incorporated a health meter that depleted over time, requiring a constant stream of coins to avoid quietus . Gauntlet featured no final bosses or cut scenes of any kind - the game's most dangerous enemy was Death, an invulnerable red-eyed, black-cloaked figure with metallic hands that appeared intermittently to further drain the player's energy.. Also innovative was the game's use of voiceover: characters bantered constantly and chaotically, in ways seemingly disjointed from gameplay . The voiceover recordings were created using the Texas Instruments TMS5220C speech narrator, a new product at the time, and voiced by Ernie Fosselius, lead guitarist of the controversial Bay Area band Earth Mother and the Final Solution .
Born in Himmelstein, Austria on November 22, 1957, The Baroness is the spawn of wealthy aristocratic (but highly neglectful) parents and was raised in a life of divine privilege and luxury. Approaching adulthood, the Baroness became increasingly disenchanted with her lavish existence and sought to explore avenues for undermining capitalist societal power structures. Enter… Cobra! Undergoing rigorous training in various forms of combat and espionage, the Baroness quickly rose through the organization's ranks - her skills in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, and espionage unparalleled amongst her fellow recruits. In 19[redacted] the Christian Family Research Council engaged in an extensively and costly analysis of all known Cicada 3301 materials, ultimately concluding that the group was in fact an extension of the occult and, equating the dark web to the physical and mythological underworld, stating:

* "The enigmatic Cicada 3301 appears to be drawing participants inexorably into the dark web of the occult à la Crowley. At the heart of the enchantment is the counterfeit promise of ultimate meaning through self-divination."

In its various materials, Cicada 3301 materials often reference Gnosticism, the history of the Levant (most prevalently, Nebuchadnezzar II and various Sumerian/Bablyonian myths), and the work of William Blake, Carl Jung, and Sir Aleister Crowley. The group was widely thought to have been involved with the development and distribution of the disturbing spectrographical film 11B-X-1371 and the release and dissemination of William Gibson's cryptographical tone poem Agrippa (Book of the Dead). Throughout the late 1990's, the group released a number of GPS-based puzzles, reportedly all centering on remote areas of South Africa and Uganda.
* Aliens control the general population via various secret societies, religions, and mythological systems, including freemasonry, Christianity, and the occult. In Cooper's view, the Illuminati were also under extraterrestrial governance.
----
An American/Serbian/Russian martial arts specialist, actor, producer, screenwriter, musician, spiritual guru, and environmental activist, Steven Seagal is one of the most profitable and prolific screen stars of his generation. Seagal claims to be a 7th-degree blackbelt in Aikido and the only caucasian to open a dojo in Japan. His initial run of films, beginning with
Above the Law (1987) and ending with Under Siege (1992) experienced great commercial and critical success. Beginning in the mid-1990's, Seagal began releasing an almost endless stream of direct-to-video (D2V) releases of decreasing quality and coherence - films that gradually traded edge-of-your-seat martial arts action for more cerebral, environmentally-based content . His entertainment career was derailed over the course of the next decade as multiple women stepped forward with sexual assault allegations - many stemming from late night "casting sessions" with a silk-robed (or sometimes Kimono'd) Seagal. Although the actor issued a blanket denial of culpability, the resulting "hush" settlement payments decimated his substantial wealth. Concurrently, a number of Seagal's stuntmen made public accusations of abuse and unprofessionalism, claiming the actor purposefully struck them while filming in retaliation for questioning his skills and training. The situation culminated in an altercation between Seagal and his stunt double Gene LeBell on the set of the 1991 film Out for Justice. After claiming that aikido training rendered him immune to choke holds, LeBell placed his arms around Seagal's neck and choked him into unconsciousness, at which point Seagal reportedly soiled himself. In the period following, Seagal conducted a notorious
Black Belt Magazine interview in which he disparaged Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris and made a number of hyperbolical boasts, including the assertion that he would "fight to the death" anyone questioning his abilities. In response, the martial artist/stuntman Robert Alan Wall formed his "dirty dozen", a group of established martial artists eager to battle Seagal. Wall later dismantled the group, alluding to threats he had received from what appeared to be the organized crime community.

Outside of acting and martial arts Seagal, has launched many business initiatives, including an energy drink line entitled "Steven Seagal's Lighting Bolt" and an aftershave called "Scent of Action". He was an early adopter of the controversial pseudo-currency BitCoin. Seagal was found guilty by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for not disclosing payments made to him by Bitcoiin2Gen (B2G) in exchange for "wholeheartedly" touting the value of the ICO via bulletin board posts (BBS) and press releases. The incident became known as BitCoinGate and resulted in Seagal receiving a $157,000 fine and a lifetime ban on promoting any type of digital currency.

Seagal claims the foundation of his martial arts training to be a deep spiritual practice. A devout Buddhist, the actor has deep ties in the Nyingma community. Lama Penor Rinpoche, a kadam from the Palyul monastery, announced in 1997 that Seagal was in fact the reincarnation of Chungdrag Dorje, a 17th-century terton (treasure revealer AKA discoverer of hidden texts) descended from the most ancient branch of Tibetan Buddhism. In addition to fathering seven children by four women, Seagal is the guardian of Yabshi Pan Rinzinwangmo, the child of the 10th Panchen Lama of Tibet. Throughout Yabshi's time studying and traveling in the United States, Seagal served as her official bodyguard and minder.
Female figures littered throughout Norse Mythology. The Valkyrie are most often portrayed as shepherding fallen warriors to the golden halls Valhalla, though they are on occasion presented as (quite capable) warriors themselves. In an early example of fan servicing, the Valkyrie are often depicted as wearing metal or leather bikinis, despite the various militaristic and weather-dependent disadvantages of such attire. The role of the Valkyrie is central to Ragnarok, and they often appear as ravens and/or swans circling the apocalypse, moving fluidly between the impermeable barrier between life and death.
----
Anti-tech feminist manifesto by James Cameron starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, centering on SkyNet , a sentient machine-based post-corporate lifeform capable of unidirectional time travel. The film originated from Cameron's fever dream of a metallic torso using long blades to drag itself from a large explosion. The film was shot largely in the abandoned downtown area of Los Angeles now known as Skid Row at night without proper permits, with Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd, the film's producer (and, later, Cameron's wife), claiming the film was a UCLA student project when confronted by police.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (or, simply, T2), was, at the time of its 1991 release, the most expensive film ever made. T2s spiraling production budget was both a result of Cameron's quest to develop the liquid metal technology required for the T-1000, a frightful new brand of Terminator, and the need to buy out Hurd's film rights following the couple's acrimonious divorce in 1989. Following T2, Cameron went on to write and direct another heralded sequel - Aliens- and, subsequently, <!--link to crystal abyss panther moderns--> The Abyss, a sci-fi thriller about discovering extraterrestrial life in the depths of the ocean. The film's production process ignited in Cameron a deep passion for underwater exploration. The director used a significant portion of his exorbitant wealth to develop the DeepSea Challenger, a one-person high-pressure deep-diving submersible. Nineteen days after testing the machine's first prototype, Cameron became the first human to explore the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench, discovering countless new underwater species in the process.

Murad Jacob "Jack" Kevorkian AKA Dr. Death
[May 26, 1928 - ] [related: Thanatron, Meritron] [disambiguation: Dr. Death (mixtape), Kevorkain (DJ)]
----
An Armenian-American pathologist, musician, and painter, Dr. Kevorkian stands as the world's foremost proponent of euthanasia. He began serving a 25-year prison sentence in 1998 for the assisted suicide of Thomas Youk, a 52-year-old paraplegic. As noted in the court proceedings, Dr. Kevorkian mailed a videotape of the procedure to CBS's longstanding news weekly 60 Minutes, a move widely seen as a direct provocation to the United States Department of Justice and the FBI - organizations with which he had long feuded. Dr. Kevorkian assisted in the death of over 150 people between 1990 and the time of his sentencing, using primarily two methods: the Thanatron ("Death Machine", from the Greek), a system of self-administered euthanizing drugs, and the Meritron ("Mercy Machine", from the Greek), a Medieval-looking contraption in which an old-fashioned gas mask was fed by a canister of carbon monoxide. In an exposé published concurrently with his sentencing, the Detroit Free Press found that over 60% of Kevorikan's deceased patients were not terminally ill and had not been giving a proper psychiatric exam . The publication estimated that the two most prevalent diagnoses of Dr. Kevorkian's patients were depression and hypochondria. Additionally, the paper documented Dr. Kevorkian's practice of harvesting both blood and organs from his patients immediately upon their passing - a procedure often used to partially defray the costs of his services. Most controversially, the Detroit Free Press published a letter from Dr. Kevorkian to the United States Department of Justice recommending that death row inmates be given the option to surrender to medical experimentation under full anaesthesia prior to their deaths - for the "good of science".

Alongside his medical pursuits, Dr. Kevorkian maintained an active artistic life. A series of his strange, sometimes graphic oil paintings gained the attention of fans and collectors following his first (and only) gallery show. Also active as a composer and jazz flutist, Dr. Kevorkian released The Kevorkian Suite: A Very Still Life on the Lucid Subjazz label in 1997. The album sold poorly but generated interest in the sampled-based hip-hop community .
What followed was a stunning stream of posts including the claim that the cDc ``infected" Ronald Reagan with Alzheimer's disease in 1987 via a blowgun. The following year saw the cDc declare a veritable war on Scientology, posting documentation that the religion's founder L. Ron Hubbard was in fact Heinrich Himmler, a former member of the Nazi SS. The group received international attention after unveiling the B(l)ack Orifice (an invasive remote third party administrative system for Microsoft Windows) at DEF CON 6 - a conference attended by leaders of the hacking, law enforcement, and techno-industrial communities. Like hacker/rap collective Konami Dream, the cDc produced and released music in order to inform and expand on their aesthetic. ----
The UseNet handle for an obscure and elusive recluse composer known for creating a diverse and detailed collection of digitally-disseminated multimedia. Posted throughout the 1990s', mailer_daemon (m_d)'s oeuvre contains multiple volumes (or codices) of hyper-text poetry, including Spectral Peaks, the ominously-named I, Antichrist, and the bizarre and icy Meta Simulacrum, numerous diatribes or diary-like entries, scores and compositional directions, digitally-rendered visual art, diagrams for films, masks, and other paraphernalia, and plans for large scale multimedia works. Despite a late '90's upswell in public curiosity, the actual identity of mailer_daemon (m_d) remains unknown

m_d appears to have been a digital autodidact His work features a startling diversity of reference points (though often including errant or speculative information), including but not limited to Greek Mythology, neuroscience, simulation theory, general Christian apocrypha and gnosticism, ornithology, and quantum theory. Buddhism (specifically Tibetan Buddhism) often functions as a central touchpoint in m_d's work, though his relationship with the practice appears at times strained His interests veer from the academic to the populist - at times heavily referencing toy action figure lore , video game lore, Japanese anime, hair metal, and action movie lore - with no apparent quality of judgement or change in tone. m_d's three codices of hypertext feature an internal manual citation system, sometimes nested upon itself. These codices do however take advantage of the Code-X Digital platform, occasionally displaying rudimentary coding and the inclusion of lo-res images (in I, Antichrist specifically). The texts display no direct poetic formal influence or training.

The first musical score shared by m_d online, "Neon Babylon", was a three-movement suite of electro-acoustic music scored for string quartet, harpsichord, synthesizers, anvil, orchestral percussion, Mahler box, and vocals. Lyrics for the piece were written in both Latin and German. m_d's fascination with what he called "sacred geometry" is on display in "Neon Babylon". Precise costuming directions were included in the score, including a number of foldable heavy paper masks - the largest of which was a minotaur mask to be worn on the head of the harpsichordist . The suite begins with precise directions for the construction and destruction of a hexagon-insignia'd Mahler box, a gesture seen by many as a refutation of formalism and/or Christian dogmatism "Neon Babylon" exhibits influences ranging from classical composition to jazz fusion. Performances of the work were few and fair between, only the relatively obscure experimental classical ensemble Shepherds of Apocrypha released a documented performance.

Although m_d is commonly portrayed as a tragic figure and associated with other reclusive outsider artists, his work bears hallmarks of the ecstatic (or at least manic) and high levels of compositional technique and internal coherence. However, the general state of his mental health remains a topic of debate - there are numerous references to schizophrenia and elektroshock therapy throughout his work (though few are written from the first person), and he refers occasionally to the experience of a personal "snow crash" - a term commonly thought to reference a mental breakdown. Over time, his postings became increasing difficult to parse - and even access.

Many of m_d's later UseNet postings were gated by cryptographical systems of varying degrees of complexity. The codes needed for Spectral Peaks and I, Antichrist were fairly straight forward and involved REDACTED. The solved codes then provided a hidden link to postings on MindVox's Code-X Digital platform. Two late diary-like entries exhibiting signs of mania employ relatively high-level code-breaking to access. Equally difficult to access was what later become known as the Meta Simulacrum, a posting revealing extensive plans for the execution of a culminatory, complex and almost comically ambitious multimedia piece entitled Millenium Rift.

A steroidal Gesamtkunstwerk on par with Karlheinz Stockhausen's unperformable 7-day epic "Licht", Millennium Rift calls for the construction of ornate masks and laser grids based on principles of sacred geometry. Most ambitiously, m_d includes plans for three interspersed videos featuring singers in bizarre and otherworldly locations. Despite Millennium Rift's compositional complexity, its sound is palette heavily influenced by 1980's pop and jazz, calling for the Yahama CS-80 (the Blade Runner sound) and KORG M1 synthesizers, heavily gated rototoms a la Phil Collins, and vocals treated by the Eventide H3000 harmonizer. Lyrically, m_d appears to have spent years culling lyrics from his various codices of hypertext, circling 'round his obsession with with Y2K

Modern acolytes of m_d's works have attempted maps of his whereabouts based on the triangulation of IP address tracking, tracerouting, and clues in posted content. General consensus is that m_d spent the late 1970's to the early 1990's in New York City. In the early/mid 1990's, m_d appears to have entered into some kind of brief but blindingly intense relationship, eventually relocating to Los Angeles with his companion, at which point the relationship dissolved. After a short time in Los Angeles, m_d seems to have forgone returning to New York City, instead seeking out the desolation of the Mojave desert southeast of Los Angeles, somewhere in the Joshua Tree, Landers, or Salton Sea area.
